Sometimes called a two-hand rhythm dance, the hustle has a lot of fans at weddings and social events because it fits many popular songs and music styles. It has many other names such as the four-count hustle (as compared to a three count hustle), the four count swing, the two hand salsa (in the late 1970s), the melange (the Golden State Dance Teachers Association gave it this name for their teaching syllabus in 1995), and the cherkessia step (from Israeli folk dancing). All have in common that they are referred to as even-rhythm steps.

Hustle is a versatile dance not only because it fits well with music that ranges from 120 to 180 beats per minute, but also fits well with most popular music today across a variety of style music including swing, Latin, hustle, country, and contemporary. For each style the dance easily takes on the character or style of that music. For example, in the 1970s John Travolta popularized one version of the hustle in the movie Staying Alive. Disco music was also popular in the 1970s. it has its roots in swing and Latin music. The hustle prepares you for a variety of moves that transfer to other social dances.

Hustle uses 4/4 timing and the rhythm is easy to get. The leader starts with the LF and the follower mirrors. The rhythmic step pattern is composed of four walking steps taken in repetitive pattern.

Count 1, both step forward
Count 2, replace
Count 3, both step backward
Count 4, replace
